Single-sourcing for structured FrameMaker
Sourcerer is a single-sourcing solution for structured
Adobe® FrameMaker® that replaces native conditional text, and thus
eliminates many of the limitations associated with it. With
Sourcerer, you use attributes and values (or metadata) to define
your conditional content. This simple approach to creating
conditions within FrameMaker allows you to:
- Create unlimited numbers of multiple,
overlapping conditions throughout your documents
- Assign conditions directly in the structure,
rather than in the FrameMaker’s proprietary conditional text
format
- Preserve conditions during an SGML/XML
roundtrip
- Apply color schemes to your conditional
content, including unique colors for unique combinations of
overlapping conditions
- Validate the structure of your conditional
content
- Create output directly in your source files
or in a copy of your source files, while always maintaining the
integrity of your original data
- Conditionalize entire files within a
book
- Create unlimited author comments,
automatically identified by name and date (which can also be
conditionalized)
Sourcerer works with any EDD, no matter what
attributes and values you need. In addition, Sourcerer provides a
series of “bonus” features designed to enhance the general
structured environment, including file bookmarks and automatic
window configuration.

Upgrading Sourcerer from FrameMaker 7
to FrameMaker 8
The Sourcerer plug-in is compatible with both
FrameMaker 7 and FrameMaker 8. However, users of Sourcerer with
FrameMaker 7 who wish to upgrade to FrameMaker 8 will need to
upgrade Sourcerer’s “support” files to the new FrameMaker 8 file
format.
The support files are a collection of
FrameMaker files that Sourcerer uses to save your preferences and
schemes, provide color definitions that are used when you define
colorizer schemes, and provide tutorials for using Sourcerer. Most
of Sourcerer’s support files are located in the Sourcerer install
directory (typically C:\Program
Files\Adobe\FrameMaker\Sourcerer).
Before you can use Sourcerer with FrameMaker
8, all of these files should be opened and saved as FrameMaker 8
files.
You may also have files on your network that
are used by Sourcerer. If you do not know the location of these
files, open the SrrLocalSettings.fm file that is saved in your
Sourcerer installation directory. In that file, locate the
FileLocations element. This element has three attributes—named
MasterSettingsPath, MainEDDPath, and MainTemplatePath. Each of the
FrameMaker files that are referenced by these attributes must also
be upgraded to the FrameMaker 8 file format.
